Downtown Dining Week Review: Onesto

Downtown Dining Week Review: Onesto

Downtown Dining Week in Milwaukee runs from June 2 to 9. We’re checking out as many restaurants as we can. Here’s our review of Onesto.

It was a busy, breezy afternoon at Onesto on Broadway in Milwaukee’s Third Ward. I walked into the fine dining establishment with not an empty seat in sight. Luckily I had a reservation and was seated a few short minutes after waiting for a table to clear.

My first time here since the restaurant became Onesto a couple summers ago. The walls were lined with cream-city brick and the unique light fixtures made for a slightly dim, yet cozy and romantic atmosphere. The servers appeared a bit frantic as maybe this was the busiest day of the year for the quaint eatery. I enjoyed the small bouquet of tulips on our table and my guest commented on the nice breeze that made its way from the front window to the far back of the restaurant where we were seated. A bit disappointed that we didn’t have an outdoor dining option at Onesto, the large open window that overlooked the bustling Third Ward was just the right replacement.

The Downtown Dining Week menu provided a nice selection of lunch favorites. I opted for the beet salad to start; a generous portion of spring greens topped with walnuts, gorgonzola (my favorite) and a lemon shallot vinaigrette. Earthy, yet light with a zesty kick to the dressing. Alongside our salads, the server delivered complimentary fresh bread and butter. Yum…need I say more.

I chose the Bolognese for my main course – an Italian staple – and it proved to be just that. Fresh spaghetti intertwined with fork-tender brisket and a tomato-based sauce. A healthy portion indeed, but that didn’t stop me from licking my plate. Kidding. But I did finish every last noodle.

Last but not least, I ended the meal with a slice of traditional Tiramisu. The small square of decadent dessert stood atop a pool of chocolate sauce. The chocolate sauce was a bit underwhelming, it resembled Hershey’s chocolate syrup – not a bad taste, just not what I expected of a restaurant in this class.

The service was a bit slow in trying to keep my lunch hour an “hour,” and we didn’t get much time to converse with the server about suggestions. However, the food was 5-star quality and will most definitely bring me back to this restaurant a second time. Overall I give Onesto two thumbs up.
