If you’re the kind of person who goes into a store for one thing and leaves with 17 items you didn’t know existed, Daiso might your happy place. The cult-favorite Japanese boutique – which is like if Dollar Tree and Sanrio had a baby – just planted roots in Wisconsin. And it’s a destination worth the detour.
After all, there’s something oddly euphoric about a spot where the dishware is elegantly minimalist, the bath loofahs come in eight shades of mauve, and the ramen aisle offers flavors like “chicken paitan” and “clam soy sauce.” Here’s the lowdown on your new favorite rabbit hole.

It’s time to pick your Milwaukee favorites for the year!
The Lay of the Land
Despite its nondescript location in a Kenosha strip mall (between Five Below and a shuttered Navy recruiting office), Daiso has an IYKYK status. The 4,000-square-foot store is the 199th U.S. location (the next closest is in Niles, Illinois) and brings a delightfully chaotic blend of practicality and play. Most items are $2.25, though prices can creep up for specialty finds, like giant cat plushies and mini rice cookers. Items are priced in yen, but cheat-sheet signage throughout makes converting a breeze.
“Some people come in expecting anime collectibles,” says assistant store manager Madison. “But we’re more about the everyday cultural things you’d use in Japan, like cooking tools for making the perfect rice dish or long stockings that are required for a school uniform.”
And she’s right: The aisles are a crash course in daily Japanese life. They’re organized loosely by category but filled with surprises. Even the soundtrack is on brand. Between the chirpy J-pop-style Daiso jingles and passing bursts of Selena Gomez, the vibe lands somewhere between Tokyo convenience store and a dance party in your brain.
The Goods
Seek and you shall find cloud-shaped sticky notes in the school supply section, peach frappé candies in the snack aisle, and silicone aprons in the corner where they’ve stashed elder-care accessories. There’s a rainbow of pastel storage bins, toothbrush holders shaped like woodland creatures and, yes, fencing fabric for DIY backyard chicken coops.
Need pliers? There’s a wall of them: long-nose, bent-nose, diagonal – you name it. Aisles are dotted with hundreds of scrubbers, sponges and cleaning tools with unexpected flair. The bath section carries sleek shower curtains and skin-friendly razors, while the beauty shelf features tweezers and makeup puffs in packaging that feels straight out of a Tokyo drugstore.

There’s also no shortage of joy-inducing oddballs: toothpaste tube squeezers, pineapple-shaped lip balm, party favors galore and enough stickers to make Lisa Frank weep. One aisle over, you’ll find catnip-stuffed pet toys and rice-ball molds that make lunch feel like an art form.
And yes, the kawaii runs deep. Sanrio classics like Hello Kitty and My Melody still reign, but lesser-known cuties like Rilakkuma make their rounds on mugs and stationery. If you’re into soft neutrals and calm vibes, check out the Three-Pee (3P) wellness line which includes travel-size bath goods, beige sleep masks and soft-focus diffusers for some Japanese hygge energy.
Insider Perspective
Shopper Jennifer Fett, visiting from Chicago, was thrilled to stumble across the Kenosha store. “There are a lot of fun and practical things,” she says, “but what’s really drawing me is the dishes and glassware. I’m grabbing a nice set of chopsticks and a bowl shaped like a whale shark.”
Pro tip: come on Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays. Those are restocking days, with six to eight pallets of new goods rolled out fresh. And start your browsing in the front-right corner for the latest drops. Before you check out, grab a $1 Daiso-branded reusable tote – cute, sturdy and your new badge of pride.
Because Daiso isn’t just a store. It’s a tiny, pastel-colored universe of useful nonsense and joyful design. If you can leave with only one thing, you’re doing it wrong.
