Quick Bucks- A Veteran Presence

There was a lot to be excited about last night in the Bucks season opener. The block from Giannis. Larry Sanders patrolling the lane. Jabari Parker going coast-to-coast. Somehow, though, none of those things really grabbed my attention. The thing that grabbed my attention was Jared Dudley barking out defensive assignments audible on my television in the third quarter. Focus on Jared Dudley and listen for his voice in the first seven seconds. “Dive! Triple! Triple! Triple! I’m right here. I’m right here. Here help down. Larry! Larry! Get out there!” That’s how you play defense on the backside. A…

A Bucks Crystal Ball

Photo by Eyton Z/Flickr As a new Milwaukee Bucks season, and a new Bucks era, tips off, Milwaukee Magazine’s Dan Shafer and Howie Magner fired up their email accounts and fired away with their questions and answers. Yeah, maybe they got a bit carried away. Dan Shafer: One year ago, if you would’ve told me the Bucks would enter the 2014-15 season with the No. 2 overall pick in a loaded draft, and new billionaire owners committed to keeping the team in Milwaukee, I would have been doing backflips down Wisconsin Avenue. Like many Bucks fans, I’ve pined for the…

This Drunkard Brewers Walk

It’s called The Drunkard’s Walk, and it has nothing to do with how Brewers fans are responding to the team’s sudden faceplant. Which doesn’t mean such (unendorsed) walks aren’t happening like it’s the day after Prohibition’s perdition. Just that it’s not the particular walks relevant here. No, this Drunkard’s Walk refers to a book with the daunting subtitle of How Randomness Rules Our Lives. And though author Leonard Mlodinow piles on the bane of my high school existence — namely, math — he does an expert job of making advanced concepts on statistics and probability accessible to not-so-advanced schlubs…

The 2014 Green Bay Packers and Great Expectations

With Packers season set to kick off in Seattle, Milwaukee Magazine‘s Howie Magner and Dan Shafer exchanged thoughts on tonight’s game and expectations for the season ahead.    Howie Magner: You’re dressed quite professionally today. But now that Thursday is here and the Packers season starts tonight, shouldn’t you be toasting it with your Tramon Williams plastic cup while wearing a Clay Matthews jersey, and perhaps even a Clay Matthews wig? Dan Shafer: You don’t see it now, but I am wearing my Clay Matthews jersey-shirt, and my brain is playing this video on repeat. I’m pretty excited the season…

Q&A- Brandon Knight

Bucks guard Brandon Knight at Urban Day School 12th Street Campus. Photo courtesy Milwaukee Bucks It’s now been more than a year since the Milwaukee Bucks acquired Brandon Knight in a trade with the Detroit Pistons. Knight emerged as one of the few bright spots in the Bucks’ dreadful 2013-14 season, leading the team in points (17.9 per game) and assists (4.9 per game). He also led the team in shot attempts by a wide margin despite missing 10 games due to injury. Now, in this first full summer as a Milwaukee Buck, the 22-year-old guard has been active in…

Bernie Brewer’s Sliding Scale

#170543063 / gettyimages.com Ever since it debuted at Milwaukee County Stadium, Bernie Brewer’s slide has been one of the Brewers’ most notable stadium features. The slide was modernized a bit when the Brewers moved to Miller Park in 2001 and no longer features a mug of beer at the bottom, but for many fans, seeing Bernie go down his slide is one of the highlights of the ballpark experience. The procedures have changed a bit over the years, but currently the Brewers’ mascot goes down his curved, yellow chute to mark three occasions at Miller Park: The middle of the…

Kidd In Drew Out In Bucks Coaching Circus

Better times for Larry Drew last Friday, who has been fired as Bucks head coach this morning. Photo: Howie Magner. Jason Kidd will be the new head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks.  That sentence looks weird because it is weird. According to several reports, the Bucks and Brooklyn Nets have reached an agreement that sends two second-round picks to Brooklyn in return for the coaching rights to Jason Kidd. Coach trades are uncommon, but they do happen — the Clippers dealt a first-round pick to the Boston Celtics for Doc Rivers just last year. But this one is pretty strange. …

So Much for Hammond’s Day Off

We were just about done with today’s lunch at the Lake Forest Oasis, the one that sits above I-94 on the northern outskirts of Chicago. My wife and two young children were seated at the window-facing counter, entranced by the traffic that whizzed by underneath them. I’d gone to grab a cup of coffee, a caffeinated boost for what promised to be a long afternoon at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium. Then, off to the side of the Starbucks kiosk, I noticed somebody who looked familiar. I called out his first name to see if my hunch was true, and John turned…
