This Bites: Mistral's New Brunch, Garlic Fest and More

The culinary podcast featuring 88Nine’s Tarik Moody and MilMag’s Ann Christenson talking about all things dining-related.

Tarik Moody and I kick off the latest This Bites culinary podcast on 88Nine Radio Milwaukee with a new plant-based food truck called Twisted Plants. The menu’s theme is vegan comfort foods. We’ll tell you more about where you can find the truck and what it offers.

Bay View’s Mistral restaurant, whose location is part of the Avalon Theater complex, debuts brunch service this weekend. It’s a Saturday-Sunday affair served 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on both days. Executive chef Joe Schreiter plans to serve a hybrid of classic brunch choices along with dishes that have a Mediterranean feel (which is Mistral’s theme). Hear more about the menu.
On Sunday June 23, Braise restaurant holds its annual Garlic Fest, whose vendors set up on Second and Washington streets. Restaurants such as Morel, Celesta, The Diplomat and Braise, among others, offer dishes that feature garlic. The fest also includes live music, drinks by local brewers and distillers, and a garlic-eating contest.
In 2020, Bay View will reportedly get a food hall. It will be part of a multi-use development on South Kinnickinnic conceived by New Land Enterprises, which operates the East Side food hall Crossroads Collective. The Bay View food hall will be a bit larger and offer some amenities (cooking classes, for instance) that Crossroads doesn’t have. Stream the full podcast to learn more about that and other food news you can use.

Ann Christenson has covered dining for Milwaukee Magazine since 1997. She was raised on a diet of casseroles that started with a pound of ground beef and a can of Campbell's soup. Feel free to share any casserole recipes with her.
