The Best Summer Saisons

Photo via Shutterstock Central Waters Fans Should Keep Sept. 17 Open Central Waters has been making the rounds in Milwaukee lately. On Wednesday, Sept. 17 they hit Rumpus Room (1030 N. Water St.) for a can’t-miss beer dinner. The highlight is the fact that Central Waters is tapping the delicious 16th Anniversary Stout and a new experimental sour. That’s cool enough, but Central Waters isn’t showing up alone. Prearis Brewery brings a quad and…

More Lakefront to Love

Photo via Shutterstock More Local Success It’s no secret that Lakefront Brewery sells plenty of beer. But it was especially evident last week when the brewery announced that it would expand its cold storage and distribution warehouse (218 E. Keefe Ave.) by nearly 7,000 square feet. A release by the brewery notes that production has almost doubled in the last two years and that in 2013 Lakefront produced more than 40,000 barrels. The new space should…

Bublr Bikes Debut at Red Arrow Park

The diverse crowd of bicycle enthusiasts and bureaucrats at Red Arrow Park buzzed on a sun-splashed Wednesday, and bicycle-themed music played the background (“Bicycle Race” by Queen, among others), as they awaited the announcement of a collaboration with local businesses and local government to bring a new bike-sharing system to Milwaukee. After the music died down, Kevin Hardman, launch director for Midwest BikeShare, unveiled to a crowd of about a hundred the name Bublr Bikes, a name that he says creates a brand that’s unique to Milwaukee. “Bike sharing is here in Milwaukee. We spent a lot of time naming…

Exile in Beerville

Photo via Shutterstock Serious Concerns for West Coast Brewers The most important ingredient in beer isn’t hops or grains. It’s water. A serious drought in Southern California may have a serious effect on California breweries. An article in Brewer Magazine examines the issue and how it relates to breweries like Stone and Sierra Nevada.   The topic of water usage and conservation was a big one at the Beer Summit hosted by Beer Capitol…

Photo courtesy Wisconsin State Fair. The Wisconsin State Fair is set to kick off its 163rd year. For the next 11 days, you can get as much fried, on-a-stick food as you can, while visiting animals and vendors from around the state. Last year, the fair broke an attendance record with more than 1 million people visiting. The new year brings new changes, such as 72 new food choices, a K-9 Sports arena, and an app to help you navigate your way around the fair. Here’s what you need to know before you head to the fair. Enchanted Forest

Growing up in a town of 60 residents, Timothy Westbrook might as well have been reared in Narnia. The town of Wanakena in northern New York is 45 minutes from the nearest McDonald’s. No stoplights, no cell phone reception. Westbrook’s elementary school was 15 miles away in a town decimated by mill closings. “Ninety-eight percent of the 500 kindergarten to 12th-grade kids were on the reduced-lunch program,” he claims. Bullying began quickly after Westbrook presented his Malibu Barbie at kindergarten show and tell. With his older sister watching over him at school, he endured. But when she graduated, Westbrook’s mother…

Beer Camp

Toast of the Midwest I made the trip to Navy Pier in Chicago on Sunday for Sierra Nevada’s Beer Camp Across America, an awesome traveling beer fest that is scheduled to hit just seven cities this summer. It was a great chance to try beers from Midwest breweries and a few that you just can’t get around here, like Tampa’s Cigar City (their Jai Alai IPA is delicious). There were plenty of standouts at Beer Camp, but the best beer I tried was easily Pipeworks Citra Saison. Pipeworks Brewing is a relatively small brewery in Chicago’s Bucktown neighborhood. But keep…
