At Random Is Back… But Not All the Way

The classic cocktail bar is opening once again.

At Random, the classic Bay View date-night bar known for its ice cream drinks, has re-opened on a limited basis, its new owner says.

“We are starting to open certain (Random) hours,” says a post from the bar on Facebook. “If you see the lights on stop on by, but please understand that we aren’t officially open and taking over a legend requires a lot of hands-on training.”

John Dye, the owner of Bryant’s and Jazz Estate, bought the bar on South Delaware Street this year from its owners of 54 years, Ron and Shirley Mae Zeller.

He’s planning the official opening in the coming days. Hours at the bar will be 5 p.m. to 2 a.m., Monday through Saturday. The bar will be closed on Sundays.

Last week was a “soft opening,” Dye says, with just a limited menu offered, and a limited number of people seated.

The full opening might have been sooner, Dye says, but his first child was born in mid-December. Mother and daughter are fine, but Dye hasn’t been as available to train staff as he would otherwise have been.

“If you are driving great distances,” says the bar’s Facebook post, “please call before you come, as we will be open and closed seemingly random hours and wouldn’t want you to leave disappointed.”
