Ask MilMag: What’s Your Favorite Local Comfort Food?

BLTs, enchiladas and more make up our staff’s go-to picks for a comforting meal.

1. Nueske’s BLT from West Allis Cheese and Sausage Shoppe

ARCHER PARQUETTE, MANAGING EDITOR

Sometimes I am awestruck by how much beauty can exist in something so simple. The flavorful B, the crunchy L, the bright T – my goodness, it’s a thing of wonder. When I want nothing more than a comforting, tasty meal, the BLT has long been my go-to (with a grilled cheese and tomato soup running a razor-thin second) – and the Nueske’s one at West Allis Cheese and Sausage is a crunchy, rich, delicious take on the classic sandwich. Next time life’s got you down and you need the warm, somewhat greasy embrace that only bacon, lettuce and tomato can provide, stop by the Stallis location or the Milwaukee Public Market and give one of these a try. 6832 W. Becher St. West Allis; Milwaukee Public Market 400 N. Water St.

2. Mole Poblano Enchiladas at Guanajuato Mexican Restaurant

CHELSEA MAMEROW, ART DIRECTOR

If I need comfort, I will choose Mexican food every time. There are many factors at play. It’s diving into a basket of chips and smokey salsa as soon as I sit down. It’s the warm and hearty rice and beans – a textural experience when eaten together (or scooped with chips). It’s sipping a salt rimmed margarita. On a good day, I’m likely to add tacos to complete my plate, but if I need a bit of extra comfort, you’ll find me ordering the Mole Poblano Enchiladas at Guanajuato in Bay View. Three corn tortillas filled with pulled chicken and cheese and generously smothered in a rich nutty mole sauce that pools around the enchiladas and seeps into the rice. 2317 S. Howell Ave.

3. The India Garden Buffet

ABBY YEMM, MEDIA EXECUTIVE

Highly recommend hitting India Garden’s buffet solo. No one’s looking when you line up multiple times and then go for seconds or thirds of their to-die-for mango ice cream. Joy! 2930 N. 117th St., Wauwatosa

4. Coconut Cream Pie from Honeypie

SOPHIE YUFA, EDITORIAL DESIGNER

When I want something sweet, I’ll go to Honeypie for a fresh, decadent piece of pie. Just stopped in recently for some coconut cream pie. They’re not messing around. (I’m also a big fan of Hungry Sumo’s pork buns if I want something savory.) 2569 S. Kinnickinnic Ave.

5. Spicy Miso Ramen from Easy Tyger

BRIANNA SCHUBERT, ASSOCIATE DIGITAL EDITOR

A big bowl of ramen from Easy Tyger. My favorite is the spicy miso ramen, with its soothing spicy broth and delicious veggies and tofu. I wish I could make this dish appear every time I’m having a difficult day. It warms the soul! 1230 E. Brady St.
