Ask MilMag: What’s Your Favorite Brewers Memory?

Brewers season is in full swing! Our staff looks back on some of their favorite memories of the crew.

1. Clinching the 2008 Playoffs

CHRIS DROSNER, EXECUTIVE EDITOR

I’ve had so many good times at County Stadium or the stadium formerly known as Miller Park, but my all-time favorite Brewers memory is watching the Sept. 28, 2008, game that clinched the team’s first playoff berth since 1982 (when I was just 5 years old and not particularly baseball-aware). I’d basically never been a fan of a Brewers team that was actually good. After Ryan Braun hit the home run in the bottom of the eighth to take the lead (one of Bob Uecker’s all-time calls), I sprinted three blocks to my friends’ house to watch the ninth with them. CC Sabathia finished the complete-game, 3-1 win, and the beers flowed.

2. The Meat Pile Sausage Race

MEGAN GUZMAN, CIRCULATION AND MARKETING MANAGER

One of my favorite memories from a Brewers game dates back to a family tailgate at County Stadium. We had a group of over 20 people ready to attend. Tickets were purchased, coolers were packed. But as we were setting up our tailgate area, it suddenly dawned on us that no one brought a grill! We had a mass quantity of burgers, brats and hot dogs that we needed to cook. Someone quickly ran out and bought a tiny 8-inch disposable grill. My dad was determined to cook everything we had brought, assembling all the meats into a rotating pile on the mini-grill. It was a veritable game of Tetris mixed with Jenga – making sure nothing fell off the grill, while trying to give each piece of meat its fair share of the heat from the charcoal. To quote my brother, “You never knew who would be done first. It was the meat pile sausage race.”

3. A Sausage Down and the 2011 Division Series

CHELSEA MAMEROW, ART DIRECTOR

This is tough – I have two. I was in attendance July 9, 2003 when a lousy Pittsburgh Pirate took a swing at the head of Italian Sausage, mid-race, knocking the runner to the ground and taking Hot Dog down with them. While no one was hurt, I remember really disliking that guy and feeling it showed an irreverence for baseball fans everywhere that shouldn’t be forgotten.

I was also there for Game 5 of the 2011 Division Series playoff game against the Diamondbacks. The Brewers had won the first two games and the Diamondbacks the second two. I splurged and bought tickets behind home plate. The crowd was on their feet most of the game and went crazy when they won 3-2 and advanced to the League Championship. That high, followed by the low of being eliminated by the Cardinals six games later, marked the last time I was emotionally invested in the Brewers. I can’t blame the loss, though – it was likely because I had my first kid the next year and no longer had the time. Maybe I’ll be back this year?

Tell us who you’d pick to be a Betty this year!

4. A Wedding Stopover

ABBY YEMM, MEDIA EXECUTIVE

This one is easy! Years ago, a few of my friends and I went to a game in between a wedding ceremony and a reception (there were a few hours lag time). The Brewers were playing the White Sox. There may have been a keg stand or two involved. It was a blast.

5. Milwaukee Magazine Day

ARCHER PARQUETTE, MANAGING EDITOR

September 13, 2023 – a day that will go down in the history books. That year was Milwaukee Magazine‘s 40th anniversary, and Mayor Cavalier Johnson declared it Milwaukee Magazine Day in honor of the milestone. We threw a party in the Barrel Yard outside AmFam before the Brewers took on the Miami Marlins. Although the game was unfortunately a loss, it’s still a great memory – executive editor Chris Drosner reading out the mayor’s proclamation whilst wearing a stupid hat; hanging out with everyone in the beer garden; enjoying the game and celebrating 40 years of the magazine. Good times all around.

6. Hanging Out Every Summer

SOPHIE YUFA, EDITORIAL DESIGNER

My favorite Brewers memory is getting to hang out with the MilMag team at a game every summer!
