I went to the Brewers game last Tuesday. I wasn’t feeling the best, but it was well worth it – I’m 2-0 at Miller Park so far this season. Then Wednesday came around and I really didn’t feel well. Thursday I spent the day in bed with what I think was the flu. Nearly a week later, I can’t say I’m back to 100% yet.
So I haven’t caught a lot of sports action in the last week, which means I’m in rare form (especially considering the NBA playoffs are on…I love this time of year). Of course, if there was more pressing Milwaukee sports action out there, I’d tough through it. But the Ads were knocked out of the playoffs last week, which leaves us with regular season baseball for a nice long stretch. This week I’m just sitting back, relaxing, and tuning in to watch the Crew on T.V.
But my little bout with the flu got me thinking. I started to wonder how badly I would have to physically feel to keep me from attending a post-season sporting event. Let’s say the Bucks had made it to the playoffs this year. If felt as badly as I did last Thursday – could I, would I be able to tough it out to see a playoff game live at the BC? Of course, if I did, I would have had to go to work that day too. And that makes me think back to Thursday morning when, upon hearing the first beep of my alarm, I had no doubt that I could not aptly handle teaching high schoolers for eight hours. No way, no how. But would the adrenaline produced by a post-season appearance from my favorite sports team have carried me through? I’m tempted to think it would have.
So then I started to play the “would you rather” game – sports edition. My version goes something like this:
Would you rather have to suffer through the flu during every post-season game, or not see your favorite team make the post-season at all?
Would you rather be guaranteed not to get the stomach flu for a full year, or have your favorite team make the post-season?
Would you rather see your favorite team win a championship and personally be struck with a 7-day bout of the flu, or watch your team lose in the championship game/round and remain flu-free?
It’s kinda gross, I’ll admit. And I guess you could just get a flu shot and keep root, root, rooting for the home team. But then, how would you know just how far you would go to prove your FANdemonium?
