Major League Baseball’s award season opened with a pair of disappointments for many Milwaukee Brewers fans on Tuesday, as prominent Brewers were left out of the conversation for a pair of postseason awards.
First, the BBWAA announced their nominees for their postseason awards and left catcher Jonathan Lucroy off the list of three finalists for Most Valuable Player. We now know that Lucroy finished behind Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw, Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen and Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton in the balloting for that honor. We’ll never know if Lucroy would have had a better chance if the Brewers had held on and reached the postseason.
Lucroy was a long shot to be the NL MVP, but it was more surprising when he was also passed over for the Gold Glove at catcher. Cardinals backstop Yadier Molina received that award for the seventh consecutive season despite catching in just 107 games, as compared to 136 for Lucroy. Outfielder Gerardo Parra was also a finalist for this award in right field, but finished behind Jason Heyward of the Braves.
Lucroy’s last shot to win a major postseason award will come on Thursday when the Silver Sluggers are handed out. Lucroy led all MLB catchers with 176 hits, 53 doubles and 66 walks in 2014, but both Buster Posey of the Giants and Devin Mesoraco of the Reds both finished ahead of him in OPS.
