Monday, March 26: Delicate Steve with Janka Nabay and The Fatty Acids @ Mad Planet, 10 p.m.
Every now and again, Mad Planet will book a show that you would fully expect to see listed on the Pabst website or at the very least be housed at the Cactus Club or Club Garibaldi. Such is the case tonight as New Jersey-based instrumental artist Delicate Steve storms through town. A one-man-in-his-bedroom recording operation, Delicate Steve is the brainchild of Steve Marion, an incredibly talented multi-instrumentalist with a uniquely psychedelic upbeat vibe that has to be heard to be appreciated. Janka Nabay and Milwaukee’s own The Fatty Acids open. (533 E. Center St, Mad-Planet.net)
Tuesday, March 27: B.B. King @ Potawatomi Casino’s Northern Lights Theater, 8 p.m. ($65-$85)
The undisputed king of the blues finishes off his three-night engagement in Milwaukee Tuesday night. And though the years have taken their toll on the legendary axman (he’ll turn 87 this year), King still exudes the soulful brilliance on stage that made him one of the most iconic figures in blues history. If you have not had the pleasure of witnessing King live, you should seriously consider taking this opportunity. (1721 W. Canal St., PaysBig.com)
Wednesday, March 28: Hunx & His Punx with Heavy Cream and Holy Shit! @ Cactus Club, 9 p.m.
Oakland-based Hunx & His Punx is a trashy throwback garage power pop band with an unabashedly gay twist. Think the Ramones, but with sequins. Frontman Seth Bogart (Hunx himself) nasally winds his way through infectiously catchy tune after tune on the band’s first full-length album Too Young To Be In Love. Heavy Cream and Holy Shit! open. (2496 S. Wentworth Ave., CactusClubMilwaukee.com)
Thursday, March 29: Hellogoodbye with The Fatty Acids @ Marquette University Alumni Memorial Union, 8 p.m. ($12-$15)
It’s spring concert time at Marquette University, and the college-appropriate headliner selected this year was southern California’s electro power pop outfit Hellogoodbye. And though 2010’s Would It Kill You? established a more mature and listenable sound for the group than previous efforts, the band’s inoffensive saccharine melodies are still a bit much to take. The real winner here is The Fatty Acids, who continue to get on big bills and establish themselves as one of the city’s hardest working bands. (1442 W. Wisconsin Ave., Marquette.edu)
Also: The Features @ The Rave, 8 p.m. ($10.21) (2401 W. Wisconsin Ave., TheRave.com)
Also: James McMurtry with Dana Erlandson @ Shank Hall, 8 p.m. ($20) (1434 N. Farwell Ave., ShankHall.com)
Also: Heidi Spencer @ The Jazz Estate, 9:30 p.m. (2423 N. Murray Ave., jazzestate.com)
Also: J Roddy Walston & The Business with Quinn Scharber & The Shades @ Cactus Club, 9 p.m. 2496 S. Wentworth Ave., CactusClubMilwaukee.com)
MUSIC NOTES SHOW OF THE WEEK
Friday, March 30: Fresh Cut Collective with Toussaint Morrison, Safari Al and Tarik the Architect @ Miramar Theater, 9 p.m. ($8-$10)
Fresh Cut Collective is a bit of a musical chameleon. The hip-hop collective can seamlessly share a stage with rock, pop or reggae bands just as easily as with hip-hop groups. This malleability has treated that band well and should be on full display on the group’s new album RE-FRAME (part one), which they release tonight. Check out a sneak peak of the new song “DaDa DaDa” here. (2844 N. Oakland Ave., TheMiramarTheatre.com)
Also: Oberhofer with Pond and Worrier @ Cactus Club, 10 p.m. (2496 S. Wentworth Ave., CactusClubMilwaukee.com)
Also: Police Teeth with IfIHadAHiFi, Like Like The The The Death and Strange Matter @ Quarter’s Rock ‘N Roll Palace, 9 p.m. ($7) (900 E. Center St.)
Saturday, March 31: Northless with Ahab’s Ghost, Lost Coves and Aseethe @ Quarter’s Rock ‘N Roll Palace, 9 p.m. ($6)
We make no bones about the fact that we love Northless. From the band’s punishing live show to it endlessly enjoyable album Clandestine Abuse < https://www.milwaukeemag.com/Article/382011-ReviewNorthlessClandestineAbuse >, this sludge metal juggernaut has won us over many times. If you have thus far been unswayed, it might be time to take us up on our ear-splitting recommendation, as you’ll have the bonus of seeing Ahab’s Ghost celebrating the release of its new album After The Fall. (900 E. Center St.)
Also: The Response (10-Year Anniversary/Reunion/Final Show) with Bosio @ Cactus Club, 10 p.m. (2496 S. Wentworth Ave., CactusClubMilwaukee.com)
Also: Maidens with The Blood Skulls, Lords of the Trident, Wicked Realm and Horns @ Frank’s Power Plant, 8 p.m. (2800 S. Kinnickinnic Ave., frankspowerplant.net)
Sunday, April 1: Dubtronic Kru with Mt. Zion Sound System @ Club Garibaldi, 8 p.m. ($10-$12)
It takes a special group to win an award as prestigious (and kind of ridiculous when you really think about it) as the Global Battle of the Bands “Best New Band In The World.” But despite the slightly hyperbolic title that the group earned two years ago, the fact remains that this reggae-infused super group is very good and worthy of much of the praise that has been heaped upon it. You be the judge. (2501 Superior St., myspace.com/clubgaribaldis)
