Filmed primarily here in Wisconsin, this thrilling and stylish crime drama chronicles the crime sprees of notorious bank robber John Dillinger (Depp) during the Great Depression. Both intelligent and action packed, Public Enemies’ costumes, score and sets exude 1930s authenticity and it’s historically authentic too by even filming on site at the Manitowish Waters resort where an actual shoot-out took place. Bale, as an FBI agent, is essentially wallpaper; but, Depp deftly captures Dillinger’s charisma and boldness without being showy. He is perfectly paired with Cotillard (an Oscar winner for 2007’s La Vie en Rose) who plays his feisty girlfriend, and their romance is as riveting as the shoot-outs.
