So, exactly what happens when you get a huge group of food-lovin’ folk together for a potluck picnic in the park?
Well… that’s exactly what the MKEfoodies are hoping to find out at their first annual picnic at Hart Park on Saturday, August 20th.
And I, for one, will be there to partake in all the fun.
After all, the MKEfoodies group has been cooking up all sorts of Milwaukee-style high jinks since last December, when the group hosted their first restaurant social event at Roots Cellar. Since that time, the group has visited a variety of Milwaukee spots including Mason Street Grill, Distil, INdustri Café, and the Eatery on Farwell. And the events just keep getting better and better.
“MKEfoodies is definitely all about food,” says co-founder, Paul Fredrich, “but we’re not snobs. Some people in the group are home cooks. Others are simply those who appreciate great food made by local restaurants. So, this picnic is for everyone.”
On August 20th, attendees will have the opportunity to indulge in free brats from Fox Brothers Piggly Wiggly, Usinger’s all-beef weiners from Big Frank’s Weiner Waggin, and hamburgers from Bunzels Old-Fashioned Meat Market. Buns will be provided by Saz’s, and there will even be a tray of Jamaican Me Crazy globacos from The Fast Foodie.
But, one of the most intriguing aspects of this picnic is that the event will feature pot-luck cooking from a variety of area food lovers. Rumor has it that the pot-luck sign up sheet is already pretty impressive, with great dishes like Grandma’s German Potato Salad, Orzo roasted veggies n bacon salad, smoked corn, chocolate cake, nutella meringues, and much more. Quite frankly, all that’s missing is YOUR contribution.
Admission is free and open to the public. All the group asks is that you bring a dish to pass, something to drink, and a few dollars to support their featured charity, Milwaukee Riverkeeper, an organization that aims to protect water quality and wildlife habitat in the river corridors and to advocate for sound land use in the Milwaukee, Menomonee, and Kinnickinnic River Watersheds.
“Environmental issues, particularly related to water, are intimately tied in with our food supply,” comments Fredrich, “We’d like to see a big turn-out for this event, even if it’s just to support this great cause.”
