The South Shore Farmers Market starts this Saturday, June 18th. I have been missing out on fresh fruits and vegetables lately, so it will be nice to replenish the fridge and freezer soon. I picked up a Farm Fresh Atlas at Alterra recently — it has all the needed information for Farmers’ Market planning. You can also download a PDF from their website if you can’t find one around town. So, with that in hand, I should be ready. I am not exactly a morning person so getting there well before noon poses a little problem. Luckily, Stone Creek Coffee is ready and waiting at the South Shore market and sometimes other markets, too. The stores sell nice and sturdy steel mugs that close tightly, so pack it, sip it, and throw it in your bag. No coffee stains here. Outpost Natural Foods sells lots of earth-friendly reusable bags, but my favorite is the Chico bag (mine is going on 3 yrs. old). Last year, I bought a few bars of Rock River Soap. My favorite was the Lavender Mint from the Soap of the Earth collection, but this year I hope to try a few more of these handmade, fragrant and gentle soaps. The South Shore Farmers’ Market doesn’t have any clothing vendors, but the East Side market does. Check out the Sparrow Collective booth for indie threads like the feather tank shown to the side. When I bring home my stash of produce, I like to display them out on the counter. Besides, produce like tomatoes and eggplant shouldn’t be refrigerated. For eggs or even small berries or ginger, I found this ceramic egg crate at Anthropologie. I even have a second one on my dresser for storing earrings and other jewelry. They’re really functional. Lastly, to be reminded of the farmers’ market season all year ’round, check out f2 images photography. They have a whole series of vegetable and berry photography to put in your kitchen or home.
