Some farmer’s markets have been going on so long, it’s difficult to compile an accurate history.
Take the East Side Green market for instance. This bohemian market has been going on in some form or another for about a hundred years. But, these days, you’ll find a variety of vendors, including farmers, artisans, and musicians camped out in the Beans & Barley Parking lot on Saturday mornings through early October.
I’m a self-professed farmer’s market junkie. But, I’ve always been particularly attracted to the hip, bohemian feel of the East Side Green Market – with its farm stands and music, and truly interesting artisans. It’s one of those places that feels more like a journey than a destination – and it’s a market where you want to linger, rather than simply buy your produce and leave.
And that’s exactly what sets this market apart from others. Todd Leech of the market explains: “The ESGM is a great mix of local growers, artists, food and music. It’s a place where tomatoes and flowers are as common as indie designer fashion and astonishing artwork.”
In other words, it’s not just a market. It’s an experience.
Even better, “Most of our vendors come from right here in the city of Milwaukee,” Todd explains, “That was actually one of goals in the last few years and we’ve done pretty good making sure that we have space for great local producers.”
For 2011, the market will welcome over 30 vendors, many of whom are returning from last year.
Among interesting attractions, the market will feature traditional blacksmithing and delicious African cuisine. Sweet Water Organics will be offering both produce and fresh fish. And Faythe Levine, superstar of the indie art & craft world, will bring her Sky High Boutique & Gallery to the market.
When I asked Todd for his advice to patrons looking to make the most of the East Side Green Market, he made these suggestions: “For the best produce come early, for the best music come in the middle. Understand that all of our vendors are doing this as part or all of their income and respect their pricing, if you need to deal make it a good deal for everyone.”
So stop on by this weekend. Maybe grab a bite to eat at Beans & Barley before the market begins. Browse the vendors, chat with the artists, and be sure to hang around long enough to get your groove on to some spectacular Milwaukee music. Like Lisa Gatewood (the saddest, most wonderful folk singer you’ve ever seen).
