Battling Inflated Expectations

Battling Inflated Expectations

Tuesday, April 5: The Wildbirds with A B & the Sea, The Bright White, and Ian Olevera & the Sleepwalkers at Mad Planet, 8 p.m. ($7) We’ve made plenty of references to the difficult 2010 had by throwback rockers The Wildbirds, but perhaps we haven’t shined enough light on the band’s music. When the band first burst onto the scene, the recklessly rugged rock ’n’ roll shtick seemed a bit forced. But as the years have gone by and hardened the group through countless experiences both positive and negative, The Wildbirds have matured into one of the most enjoyable bands…

Tuesday, April 5: The Wildbirds with A B & the Sea, The Bright White, and Ian Olevera & the Sleepwalkers at Mad Planet, 8 p.m. ($7)

We’ve made plenty of references to the difficult 2010 had by throwback rockers The Wildbirds, but perhaps we haven’t shined enough light on the band’s music. When the band first burst onto the scene, the recklessly rugged rock ’n’ roll shtick seemed a bit forced. But as the years have gone by and hardened the group through countless experiences both positive and negative, The Wildbirds have matured into one of the most enjoyable bands on the scene today. Also: The Ready Set with Allstar Weekend, The Downtown Fiction, We Are The In Crowd and You, Me & Everyone We Know at The Rave, 7 p.m. ($14)

(2401 W. Wisconsin Ave., TheRave.com)

Wednesday, April 6: Black Veil Brides with Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows, I See Stars, VersaEmerge and Conditions at The Rave, 7 p.m. ($15.50)

Sounds like a quaint, enjoyable evening of adult contemporary groups playing their soft rock hits. Wait, Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows (D.R.U.G.S.) is a post-hardcore band? I did not see that one coming. (2401 W. Wisconsin Ave., TheRave.com)

Thursday, April 7: Sharon Van Etten with Little Scream and Juniper Tar at The Pabst Theater, 8 p.m. (FREE)

Although the introspective female folk singer/songwriter genre is by no means a sparse collection at this point, there is always room for a talented newcomer like Sharon Van Etten. Heart wrenchingly honest and deliberate, Van Etten croons with the best of them. And on top of all of this, it’s a free show with Milwaukee’s completely underrated Juniper Tar? Yes, please. (144 E. Wells St., PabstTheater.org)

Also: Over The Rhine at Turner Hall, 8 p.m. ($20)

(1032 N. Fourth St., PabstTheater.org)

Also: Davila 666 with Bzybodies, Ramma Lamma and The Get Drunk DJs at Cactus Club, 9:30 p.m. ($8)

(2496 S. Wentworth Ave., CactusClubMilwaukee.com)

Also: Carnifex with Oceana, Danza, Within The Ruins and A Night At The Chalet at Miramar Theatre, 5:30 p.m. ($13/$15)

(2844 N. Oakland Ave., TheMiramarTheatre.com)

Friday, April 8: The Trusty Knife at The Uptowner, 10 p.m.

Fueled by throbbing bass lines, a wailing brass section and jangly guitars, The Trusty Knife is just as much ’70s funk band as it is modern geek-alternative band. The result is a fun, uncontrollably danceable vibe that defies any proper categorization. (1032 E. Center St.)

The Trusty Knife – “Skinny Flubbin'” – Live at Cactus Club from High Frequency Media on Vimeo.

Also: Cornmeal @ Shank Hall, 9 p.m. ($10/$12)

Saturday, April 9: Maritime with Sat. Nite Duets and Testa Rosa @ Turner Hall, 8 p.m. ($10)

Ever since former The Promise Ring members Dan Didier and Davey von Bohlen started the band Maritime, the pressure was on for the super group offspring to hit it big the way The Promise Ring did in the late ’90s. But much to the band’s credit, they have never let the inflated expectations get to them. Children and careers have limited the band’s touring schedule but have provided plenty of inspiration for Maritime’s latest release, Human Hearts. The band will officially release the decidedly mature and impressive album with help from Sat. Nite Duets and Testa Rosa. (1032 N. Fourth St., PabstTheater.org)

Also: “Legends of Hip Hop” with Salt ‘N Pepa, Naughty By Nature, Kool Moe Dee, Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick at Milwaukee Theatre, 8 p.m. ($42.50 – $52.50)

They really couldn’t find any better representatives for a Legends of Hip Hop tour? Where is Digital Underground, in a Burger King bathroom? Where is Another Bad Creation, at the playground? Where is Onyx, in the gutter one? Well, you get the idea. (500 W. Kilbourn Ave., MilwaukeeTheatre.com)

Also: The Meteah Strike with The Felix Culpa, Into It Over It, Native and Cloud Mouth at Miramar Theatre, 5:30 p.m. ($10/$12)

(2844 N. Oakland Ave., TheMiramarTheatre.com)

Also: Andre Williams with White Faces and Aluminum Knot Eye @ Cactus Club, 10 p.m.

(2496 S. Wentworth Ave., CactusClubMilwaukee.com)

Sunday, April 10: Wormrot with Enabler at Mad Planet, 8 p.m. ($5)

You really just don’t see enough good grindcore bands from Singapore these days. This one looks promising! (533 E. Center St., Mad-Planet.net)

Also: Death Star with Myles Coyne, Canon City, Project Moon and Jake Wood at Miramar Theatre, 7 p.m. ($9/$12)

(2844 N. Oakland Ave., TheMiramarTheatre.com)
