It's been five years since the Night Market got its start.
The weather is getting warmer and the nights are getting longer. Everyone knows that means that summer is right around the corner – and with it NEWaukee’s Night Market.
From the second Wednesday of June through September, you’ll get the chance to shop and eat your way through Wisconsin Avenue.
The idea for the Night Market came when NEWaukee received a grant enabling them to host an event for the community. While brainstorming possible ideas, they realized that people don’t visit Downtown, and especially Wisconsin Avenue, as much as they used to. They found that people weren’t aware of events going on in the area, weren’t interested in spending time Downtown and didn’t feel safe at night.
The team took these feelings into consideration and decided they wanted to reverse the stigma of downtown Wisconsin Ave. Wyatt Tinder, NEWaukee’s Communications and Design Specialist, says that their goal was to “make a safe, fun and family friendly environment,” that community members could enjoy.
Since the first Night Market back in the summer of 2014, NEWaukee achieved their goal, and then some. Tinder says that last year’s turnout was their biggest yet and that they even had to expand the street limits of the market in June. “We were blown away. The attendees last year had doubled, surpassing what we expected.”
NEWaukee plans to “mix it up” this year by providing additional performances and expand the experience. How? For one thing, they’re planning on bringing beer from six craft breweries to the market.
Dates for this year’s market are: June 12, July 10, August 14 and September 11.
