Peggy Williams-Smith, CEO of Visit Milwaukee, joined Milwaukee Magazine Editor and Publisher Carole Nicksin for a livestream lunch Monday.

Williams-Smith discussed the pandemic’s impact on Milwaukee’s tourism industry and plans for the Democratic National Convention.

“Tourism is one of the three pillars of Wisconsin’s economy,” Williams-Smith said. “This is uncharted, unprecedented territory for our hospitality community.”

The pandemic brought the tourism industry to a halt, but Williams-Smith said she expects leisure travel and some business travel to resume soon.

Williams-Smith also talked about the rescheduled DNC. She said the committee is still monitoring the situation to make sure the convention can be held as safely as possible.

The rescheduled convention would be much smaller than the original event, but Williams-Smith said it could still be an important economic boost for the city.

“We’d still be on the world stage,” Williams-Smith said. “However small or large it is, it’s still an opportunity for Milwaukee to shine.”
