There Won’t Be Fireworks at the Lakefront on July 3rd This Year

The display will return in 2022.

Like last year, the July 3rd fireworks at the Milwaukee Lakefront are canceled. The annual show is a beloved Milwaukee tradition that has been around for more than 50 years, but it won’t make its grand return until the summer of 2022, according to a news release from the Milwaukee County Parks.

The fireworks display attracts more than 100,000 people to Milwaukee’s lakefront each year. The festivities usually include a full day of picnicking while people stake out their spot to watch the show at Veterans Park. Leaders in the Parks Department say that they simply don’t have the bandwidth to make it happen this year, especially on top of trying to bring back regular summer recreation opportunities

“We also looked at the possibility of postponing the event until the fall, but it comes down to simply lacking the resources and staffing needed to prepare and clean up from such a large-scale event,” Guy Smith, the Milwaukee County Parks Executive Director, wrote in a news release.

Part of the problem is that Milwaukee County is having a hard time recruiting and hiring seasonal staff, “which is preventing a return to pre-pandemic Parks service levels,” Smith said. The news release included a plug for the parks employment opportunities, which you can peruse, here

American Family Insurance has committed to sponsoring the 2022 event. They were also a sponsor in 2019.
