The whacky Bananas will face their rival, the Party Animals, and other baseball teams throughout the tour that begins in February.
In addition to its players, the Bananas feature a cast of characters that include dancers, performers, mascots and musicians. The Bananas put their own twist on America’s pastime. The game is fast-paced and action-packed with rules that include no bunting, a two-hour time limit, fans catching foul balls for outs, batters stealing first base and a one-on-one tiebreaker showdown.
The team has played in kilts and players have been escorted to the plate by a pep band or like in golf, a caddie. A player has even pitched and gotten a hit while batting, and running, on stilts.
The Bananas are especially known for their epic scoring celebrations, from running through the crowd to performing fully choreographed dance routines.
Post-game interviews with players have occurred in the shower, bathroom stalls, ice bath, massage table and even in the player’s own bed.
“The response has been absolutely Bananas for this world tour,” said Bananas’ owner Jesse Cole, who dons a yellow tuxedo for every game. “Everywhere we go we hear from fans begging us to come to their city. We are so grateful for their support and because of their passion for the Bananas and Banana Ball we knew we had to extend the tour dramatically in 2023. Now we are bringing the show to almost four times the amount of cities as we did in 2022 to make sure we able to connect with as many Bananas fans as possible.”
Based in Savannah, Georgia, the team was founded in 2016 and had, until last season, competed in the Coastal Plain League, where they won three championships.
The team carried out a regional tour of seven cities in the Southeast and Kansas City in 2022 while maintaining a home base at Savannah’s Grayson Stadium.
The 2023 Banana Ball World Tour schedule features 70 games in 33 cities across 21 states between Feb. 17 and Sept. 16.
The 2022 World Tour was turned into a five-part documentary, Bananaland, that can be seen on ESPN+.
“The 2023 world tour will be the most mind-boggling, exhilarating, craziest, and fun thing that has ever happened in sports,” Bananas’ head coach Tyler Gillum said. “The show will be undeniable. We will have 40 of the most highly talented and wildly entertaining players in the world traveling around the United States creating ‘never forget moments’ for every family that comes to a game.” For a complete schedule and opportunity for tickets, go to the team’s website and join the ticket pre-sale list and to get information on group outings.
