Milwaukee Style on Display

If I hear one more person say that Milwaukee isn’t fashionable, I just may have to hit him over the head with my Coach briefcase. Such blanket statements, in my opinion, show how disconnected the people that make those remarks are from all the passion and energy our denizens have about the style they sport. For example, Gallery Night has developed over the years into not only a place to discover your love of art and design, but also an evening to strut your creative stuff sartorially, whatever it may be. The absolute fusion of art, design and fashion could…

Fashion Triple Play

When I started writing this column almost two years ago, little did I know that I would learn so much about the people of Milwaukee and our love affair with fashion. Like most large metropolitan areas, we have a diverse culture that is reflected in what we wear, as well as how we present our ideas of what constitutes fashion. I was in attendance at three events in the past week, each one of them a unique ingredient of our city’s fashion recipe.  While I have never claimed that I can attend every single fashion event that I’m invited to,…

Running Up

Now in its seventh year, RunUp to the Runway is the celebration of Milwaukee’s fashion, art and design scene. Held at the Milwaukee Art Museum next Friday from 5 p.m. until midnight, this stylish soiree features enough components to keep even the most discriminating fashionistas busy for the entire evening. During the run of the exclusive party, attendees can view the museum’s current exhibit, “Impressionism: Masterworks on Paper,” to get their evening started. From there they may sip cocktails and snack on hors d’oeuvres from the museums own Café Calatrava. Or perhaps they’d like to discover up and coming Mount…

Rubber Soul

World War II Wellies Remember the torrential rains that wreaked havoc and caused massive flooding last year? Milwaukee has seen more than its fair share of inclement weather. In a Facebook post a week ago, a friend posted a query: should she buy a pair of cool and brightly patterned rain boots or not? Reactions were mixed at best, but one thing was clear. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, rubber boots are a part of the fashion landscape.  The humble and sometimes ungainly rubber rain boot has a long history in both service and fashion. The Wellington boot has also…

Fall Fashion Trends

When it comes to fall fashion, there are a few trends that I think could be done by anyone, no matter what shape and size. These are all photos that I took during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in February at Lincoln Center, NYC. You’ll note that these aren’t things I’m pulling out of a hat, although a furry hat this season would definitely work! Rather, they are an amalgamation of what designers literally know people could adapt to their own wardrobes. These are the best and most wearable that I could see, and should give you some inspiration into what…

Bon Ton Stores step up to the Fashion Plate

For the full John Bartlett Consensus line, check out our photo gallery. Milwaukee’s own Bon-Ton Stores, Inc. and designer John Bartlett have come together to create a fashion forward menswear collection for their stores, not only here in town but across the country. The brand will be titled John Bartlett Consensus and will offer men’s sportswear for both career and casual lifestyles.  The line is available now in all area Boston Stores and feature themes that have personally influenced Mr. Bartlett. And, may I say, these are looks that men of all kinds would actually want to wear. Pieces that stand the…

Runway Wrap Up

For a look at all the trends described below, check out our gallery. A lot of the designers that I mention in this column may not seem all that familiar to you, and there’s a reason. It is simply that I am not invited as a guest to shows like Michael Kors, Donna Karan, Calvin Klein or many other notables. I am not a buyer or writer for a national fashion magazine. I would not be a priority on their PR person’s directory of who to have in attendance. That said, it does allow me to focus my attention and…

Runway Report

For a look at all the trends described below, check out our gallery.  As you may or may not know, what we see on the runways of MBFW is not necessarily what ends up on racks in a shop, boutique or store near you. Designers propose looks that comprise collections of clothing to buyers and the fashion press twice a year in hopes of getting orders for some of the garments shown. The pieces you’ll see in the photos here are most likely one-off samples made specifically for these runway spectacles. If orders are received for the garments they go into…
