1. Pigeon Peas With Rice

ALLISON GARCIA, DIGITAL EDITOR

Just like my grandma makes them. She hails from Puerto Rico, and I swear the authenticity gives them extra flavor. Delicious, oily yellow rice made with pigeon peas, pork and love – that’s the taste of home.

2. Fried Chicken

ARCHER PARQUETTE, MANAGING EDITOR

When I was a kid, Tuesdays were half-off day at Popeyes, and we always took advantage. Man, I still remember the smell when my mom would bring the bucket of fried chicken home. It’s far from fancy, but there was nothing better to get little Archer through the week, and I’d say that’s what comfort food is all about.

3. Lasagna

ANN CHRISTENSON, DINING EDITOR

This is at the top of the many dishes that bring me solace, a casserole that combines two classic ingredients: pasta and cheese. I don’t discriminate on style of lasagna, either. Red sauce with ground beef? I’m all in. Bechamel with spinach? Sign me up.

4. Smothered Chicken and Rice

CHELSEA MAMEROW, ART DIRECTOR

“My mom made this quick go-to meal with a can of cream of mushroom soup. While my version only slightly resembles what I ate as a kid, it reminds me of her and gathering around the dinner table every evening.”

5. Chili

CHRIS DROSNER, EXECUTIVE EDITOR

To me, chili means football, get-togethers and a kind of fullness that’s a bulwark against the cold. And the nearly ritualistic making of it satisfies as much as actually eating it. Chopping the vegetables, opening can after can of beans and tomatoes, timing everything just so, and then just waiting as the awesome smells fill the house.

6. Soup

GLENDA MITCHELL, PHOTOGRAPHER

Definitely soup. It’s a complete meal. A nice, loaded potato, autumn squash or beer cheese calms my soul.
