Locust Street Festival Celebrates 40 Years with 7 Stages of Riverwest Music

Festival Season gears up this week with one of the summer’s signature street festivals. Plus: Chill on the Hill kicks off, PrideFest takes over Henry Maier Festival Park and more.

Festival season is formally underway this week. The weekly Bay View music series, Chill on the Hill, kicks off in Humboldt Park on Tuesday evening with a performance by The Mosleys and an opening routine from the Bay View High School Drumline. Jazz in the Park is already in week two of its Thursday night music series, showcasing the retro soul stylings of Sonny Knight & The Lakers.

And Henry Maier Festival Park is officially open for the summer, as PrideFest takes over the grounds this weekend with performances by (Sarah Silverman on Friday; Big Freedia, Crystal Waters and Deborah Cox on Saturday; and Blondie and GGOOLLDD on Sunday). Also, check out the Milwaukee Record stage for locally-sourced entertainment. For more DIY offerings, the fourth annual Filth Fest injects Riverwest with a subversive punk spirit this weekend and aims to support area LGBTQ+ organization, GSAFE.

But perhaps the best part of the Milwaukee summer has to be the street festivals. There’s nothing like grabbing a beer and walking outside from stage to stage catching some live entertainment. The Locust Street Festival of Music and Art, which happens this Sunday, captures this attitude perfectly. The day commences with a 1.8 mile beer run throughout the neighborhood and culminates into a full day of music across seven stages, offering some of the most relevant Riverwest musicians. So, grab a cold beverage, catch some sun rays and see a set from these bands:

Stream of the Week

On 2013’s Electric Manland, Sat. Nite Duets discovered a sound that merged the slacker rock influences with more eclectic flourishes. The band has seemingly reinvented itself again on forthcoming album Air Guitar. The first single “St. Yuppie” was released via Stereogum last week and hints at a breezy indie-pop direction.

Video of the Week

Trapper Schoepp released a new music video from his latest album Rangers and Valentines this week. “Settlin’ or Sleepin’ Around” finds Schoepp living in the lower duplex below an older shut-in, one who stealthily gathers his mail to avoid being seen, that is before Schoepp’s party attitude and friendly dog eventually gets the neighbor to come out and have some fun. The timid man, played by Office Space’s Richard Riehle, is a homage to Schoepp’s deceased neighbor, friend and album namesake, George Valentine, with whom Schoepp would swap records and PBRs.

His talents include music criticism, riding a bicycle, drinking tasty beers and a crafty croquet swing. His weaknesses comprise Jean-Claude Van Damme movies, professional wrestling and his ever-growing record collection. He’s in desperate need to find more physical (and hard drive) space for the exceptional albums Milwaukee musicians keep churning out.
