When the COVID-19 pandemic shut down New York City in 2020, Keith Barnes and his wife, Carol Alexander, were inspired to return to their hometown of Milwaukee. With more than 20 years of architectural leadership experience designing projects ranging from single-family homes to high-rise condominiums, Barnes saw an opportunity to bring his expertise home. Together, he and Alexander founded KCB Architects shortly after returning to Wisconsin.

Today, KCB Architects provides design services for a diverse portfolio that includes custom homes, residential remodels, multifamily developments, institutional facilities and commercial spaces.

At the heart of KCB’s approach is a commitment to collaboration. Every project is tailored to the client’s vision and goals, with clients actively involved throughout the design process. The result is a highly personalized experience and thoughtfully crafted space that reflect each client’s needs. Barnes leads the firm’s architectural practice, while Alexander oversees business development and community engagement. A dedicated civic leader, she serves on several Milwaukee-area boards, including the Rotary Club of Milwaukee and Friends of the Milwaukee Public Library.

“We’re deeply invested in giving back to this community,” Alexander says.

Despite the firm’s growth, Barnes and Alexander remain intentional about maintaining a small, close-knit team. They prioritize work-life balance, collaboration and a strong company culture. “Keeping our team close and keeping it small is critical,” Alexander says. “We’ve created this great culture that in turn helps us to be a great company and do great work for our clients.”
