Men Are Putting Away Their Razors for a Cause

Some of the men eschewing shaving this November aren’t just trying to catch 15 more minutes of zzz’s.

If you suddenly notice an increase in beards around town, it isn’t because a boatload of hipsters from Brooklyn have come to check out our microbrewery scene. It’s actually for a good cause. NovemBeard is upon us, an annual challenge where participants forgo shaving for the month to raise money for the Guest House of Milwaukee and bring awareness to men’s health issues.

Danny Kerns, a financial advisor at Robert W. Baird & Co., raised $500 last year to benefit the GHoM, which provides services to the chronic homeless male population in Milwaukee. This year, he hopes to raise $1,000.

The Guest House of Milwaukee has been providing education, housing, shelter and services to the homeless since 1982. Every year, the GHoM serves about 1,000 adult men, from 18-year-olds who are no longer in foster care to military veterans.

As an added incentive, Kerns is allowing his top donor to decide how he will shave his beard at the end of the month. From a soul patch to mutton chops, Kerns will sport the chosen beard ‘do for 24 hours and meet up with the donor to take a picture together.
