Face of Social Enterprise

In November, Sherman Phoenix celebrated five years in business. The entrepreneurship hub opened in Sherman Park in 2018, in the shell of a former bank which was burned during civil unrest. It has since become a showcase for Black-owned businesses, housing over 50 vendors since opening. Businesses at Sherman Phoenix range from food and drink vendors to wellness services and clothing shops, and much more.
“We’re a vibrant hub for entrepreneurs,” says Dr. Stacia Thompson, the president and CEO. “You can feel the collaborative spirit when you walk inside.”
The organization offers support, mentoring and coaching for business owners through its Phoenix Rising program. Through workshops, technical assistance and more, the nonprofit helps businesses grow, add jobs and generate economic growth. Sherman Phoenix’s Community Business Academy just began teaching its first cohort of students this year, and the nonprofit also partnered with Professional Dimensions to launch the Women and Moms Entrepreneurship Network, providing resources and support for female entrepreneurs.
With a focus on mental, physical and financial wellness, Sherman Phoenix also offers a wide variety of cultural programming open to the community, including its Front Porch live music series, Veterans Self Care Sundays, Monthly Youth Trap Therapy, Community Baby Showers and more.
A capital campaign is currently underway to raise funds for adding more space to house additional businesses, and to expand the services and support Sherman Phoenix offers. “When you step inside Sherman Phoenix, it’s like no one is a stranger,” Thompson says. “We call it the ‘Sherman Phoenix effect.’ We have a culture of support and community.”
