For four years running, Marquette University High School’s Science Olympiad team has won the Wisconsin state competition. The reigning champs placed in the national competition each year as well, and finished 10th in the nation this year.

Science Olympiad competes in multiple educational events – from building a robot to identifying plant species to studying microbes. MUHS offers Science Olympiad opportunities at both the varsity and JV level. “The team is incredible. It’s a group of very bright students, with great coaches, who have bonded and challenge each other,” says Roxanne Peelen, a mother of a Science Olympiad student.

Science Olympiad is just one of the many college prep opportunities for MUHS students to pursue across the academic and STEM spectrum. Team members compete at science tournaments nationwide and have attended colleges that include the University of Chicago, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Yale, Stanford and UW-Madison.

“We have the support of very qualified faculty,” says head Science Olympiad coach Nicole Williams. “Our administration has said, ‘What do you need? How can we help? What’s next?’”

“Being a part of a high school academic team like Science Olympiad has challenged our son to reach beyond the classroom with research,” says Peelen. “They’ve set huge goals all year long as they have traveled the country competing at top competitions. The state championships and the competitions in Hawaii or at MIT are amazing, but the best part is the lasting friendships.”
