Face of Arts Collaboration

Marcus Performing Arts Center is a cultural hub for Milwaukee. Whether it’s hosting dozens of local, regional and national performances each year, putting on vibrant experiences like Rainbow Summer, or producing cultural events with partners across the city, MPAC’s impact is felt throughout the community.
“Our culture is made up of many different people, with unique voices and perspectives,” says Anthony Smith, the director of community partnerships. “At the Marcus Performing Arts Center, we offer cultural programming to reflect and celebrate those diverse voices. That is our commitment to the community, so that everyone can see themselves here.”
As a nonprofit organization, MPAC relies on corporate, foundation and individual support to provide its diverse cultural programming. It also partners with many local organizations to plan cultural programming and events that reflect and celebrate the diversity of Milwaukee. Willie Jude, executive director of the Milwaukee Public Schools Foundation, champions the cultural programming amongst his colleagues.
An average student matinee brings in 1,600 students – often providing an important first exposure to the arts. Through her role with the Milwaukee County Office of Equity, Jacqueline Zeledon participates in the MPAC’s annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration, a longstanding citywide celebration that showcases student talent.
MPAC plans many such events throughout the year, each with the support and collaboration of community partners. Diana Billstrom of the Bay View Community Center participates in the planning committee for the annual César Chávez Celebration. Future plans include a Native Celebration, and Dan Terrio of the Milwaukee County Department of Human Resources will serve on that planning committee.
Recently Smith received a Milwaukee County Health and Equity Champion Award for his work with MPAC, collaborating with organizations and helping to create and provide opportunities for access to the transformational power of the performing arts.
