In 1984, ComedySportz formed in Milwaukee. The fledgling improv group took a novel approach to comedy – treating it like a sport. For each match, a referee would oversee a competition between two teams of improv comedians, fighting to one-up each other in laughs.

The competitive, hilarious approach proved to be a hit. Forty years later, ComedySportz (CSz) has over 24 locations around the world and has performed more than 16,000 shows.

“From our in-house matches every weekend to our road shows, we have entertained easily over 100,000 people over the years,” says Dick Chudnow, the group’s founder. “Our success comes from our firm belief that comedy is for everyone.”

CSz’s flagship location in Walker’s Point remains a cornerstone of the comedy community in the city. In addition to its ComedySportz matches, the theater hosts over 100 improv, sketch, stand-up and musical productions every year. While most comedy clubs admit only people older than 21, CSz hosts all-ages shows, as well as educational programs for comedy-loving kids and adults.

“We are so proud of the fact that anyone and everyone can enjoy Comedy-Sportz – not only our shows but our educational programs,” Chudnow says. “Improv is about connection and bringing people together to build a better community through authenticity and laughter. It has been our greatest honor to be part of the Milwaukee community for 40 years.”
