Since its founding in 1997, Nelson, Krueger & Millenbach, LLC has become one of the area’s most trusted boutique family law firms. At the heart of the firm is a six-woman team dedicated to easing many of life’s most difficult moments, including divorce, child custody and support paternity matters, domestic violence and more.

Co-founded by attorney Teri Nelson, the firm has been in its current existence for nearly 20 years. “My goal when establishing this firm was to provide experienced and compassionate representation in the family law field,” says Nelson. Attorneys Rebecca Millenbach and Alison Krueger partnered with Nelson in 2006. Partner Aislinn Penkwitz joined the group in 2015. More recently, the accomplished team has also welcomed attorneys Amy Fry-Galow and Heidi Nepscha.

Though the partners’ paths to family law differed, all four discovered the same thing – that this area of law allowed them to combine negotiation, creative problem-solving and legal expertise in a way that could bring cooperation and compassion to often fraught situations.

“When dealing with divorce and custody cases, it’s hard to feel like there’s a true ‘win,’” says Millenbach. “The most successful cases are the ones where we can help our clients have a big say in the outcome, like through mediation or settlement conferences. We work to make sure our clients and their families walk away informed, supported and equipped to start their next chapter.”

The firm’s success lies not just in its individual talents but in its unified approach to family law. “We all enjoy problem-solving,” Krueger says. “I approach cases with a mindset of resolution, but I’m always preparing in the background for trial.” That dual focus – collaboration and preparation for litigation – is central to how the firm supports clients through one of the most difficult times in their lives.

The team’s efforts have merited multiple recognitions and awards. Each partner in the firm has been nationally recognized as a Super Lawyer. Krueger and Millenbach are fellows in the American of Matrimonial Lawyers, and Millenbach is also a fellow in the International Academy of Family Lawyers. And recently, Krueger has been invited to teach future judges at the Judicial College.

“We are stronger individually because we are together,” says Penkwitz. “We could not be as dynamic, knowledgeable or successful if we didn’t have this strong group of attorneys collaborating and supporting one another.”
