The United Community Center’s Latino Arts Gallery will exhibit the works of local artist Rafael Francisco Salas. His surrealist landscape and still-life paintings depict Wisconsin’s sometimes-conflicting eccentricities.

Traumas of Policing: Stories from Milwaukee’s Youth
Dec. 3
A group called the Youth Video Collective created short films about how segregation, racism and interactions with law enforcement have affected their lives. Washington Park’s Urban Ecology Center hosts a screening.

Milwaukee Hmong New Year
Dec. 3-4
The city’s Hmong community rings in 2017 with a song and dance contest, a pageant, plenty of traditional foods and a whole lot more at State Fair Park Exposition Center.

If you take the Pfister Hotel’s elevator up to swanky lounge Blu on this day, you’ll find a happy hour during which 10 percent of the proceeds and all the tips go to United Way.

Claire Hanan worked at the magazine as an editor from 2012-2017. She edited the Culture section and wrote stories about all sorts of topics, including the arts, fashion, politics and more. In 2016, she was a finalist for best profile writing at the City and Regional Magazine Awards for her story "In A Flash." In 2014, she won the the Milwaukee Press gold award for best public service story for editing "Handle With Care," a service package about aging in Milwaukee. Before all this, she attended the University of Missouri's School of Journalism and New York University's Summer Publishing Institute.
