“A relatively mindless thrill ride…” J.R. Jones, Chicago Reader
Like the devouring black hole the evil Romulans are using to destroy planets, Star Trek sucks you in from the start with its witty banter, frenzied action sequences and insightful but amusing character backstories. As the future Captain Kirk (Pine) battles those vengeful Romulans on his first expedition on the USS Enterprise, this fun and accessible reboot remains true to the mythology and characters while unfolding an interesting, time-trippy storyline that even involves the original Spock (Nimoy). The young actors are true to these iconic characters and are perfectly cast, especially Pine who has surprisingly good comedic chops and Quinto who deftly portrays Spock’s inner turmoil.
