Moct, (240 E. Pittsburgh Ave.), pronounced “MOST” is Serbian for “bridge” and is a perfect example of a revamped garage transformed into a posh bar. Located in the artsy Third Ward the bar offers valet parking and coat check services ($2). Their Web site (www.themoct.com) describes Moct as “an atmosphere where people, music, art, architecture, design and ideas intersect and mix.” And it is definitely a mixture of sights, sounds and people.

Large pieces of artwork hanging on the walls and sophisticated Christmas decorations welcome customers as they walk inside the large, open warehouse building. On a Friday night, around 11:30 p.m., there was no one on the centrally located dancefloor, but an impressive crowd of professionally dressed people in their thirties, forties and fifties mingled by the bar, back lounge and upstairs balcony room. The deejay spun techno and house mixes.

On Friday and Saturday nights, ladies drink free Finlandia vodka cocktails until 11 p.m. Moct has also been known to host funky fashion shows on Wednesday or Friday nights. The large space lends itself perfectly to such an event.

Contrary to a bartender’s claim to being a “beer bar mainly,” I found most of the crowd to be drinking cocktails and martinis. Unibroue ($5) was also the only beer on tap that night, but it turned out to be a very tasty, light ale. The Sangria ($7), made of pomegranate wine, a splash of coke, squeeze of lemon, lime, orange and cherry juice mixed with fruit, was very good. I’ve had better Mojitos ($7), but they were the typical mix of Bacardi light rum, muddled limes, sugar, mint with a splash of soda.

Fridays are happy hours from 5-8 p.m. featuring drink specials and free appetizers. Other drinks on Moct’s menu are: Joy Ride ($7), Campari, muddled lemon and sugar, and a splash of soda. Grapefruit Cooler Martini ($10), Finlania grapefruit vodka, sour mix, grapefruit splash and soda. French Martini ($10), Ketelone Citroen, Chambord, Raspberry Liqueur and pineapple juice.
