In Their Own World
Twelve-year-old Benjamin sits alone for hours, whining to himself and expressing pain at the slightest touch. Mike, 4, spins things repeatedly and sometimes darts off in crowded shopping malls. These children, and the author’s own son, are autistic, mostly cut off from normal communication. Their parents reach out anyway, look for signs of hope, and carry on.
