I interrupt your regularly scheduled online reading for a quick Sports Nut update. Howie is on deadline and since I’m currently winning the office NCAA pool (for entertainment purposes only, of course), I figured I’d take a minute to direct you to short profile of Brandon Jennings that just went live on GQ (and will appear in the April issue).

Being a less-than casual basketball fan myself, the emergence of Brandon Jennings is one of several developments of the current season that has me pausing ever-slightly longer whenever I stumble upon the team playing on TV (recent victories against Denver, Utah, Boston, Atlanta and Cleveland and a tightening grip on the 5th playoff seed help too). From his rookie record 55-point explosion to his Kid ’n Play flat-top, there is a lot to like about the newest Milwaukee star.

In the piece, Jennings talks about meeting President Obama, how Twitter helps him cope with homesickness and, most prominently, his desire to take R&B singer Ciara out for a night in Milwaukee (dinner at Carnevor then Ninja Assassin sounds like a good time to me). It’s a quick and fun read that really helps one understand what makes the 20-year-old sensation tick. And though he still has a long way to go, any time a writer uses the names Iverson, Shaq, LeBron, Wade, Magic or Nash – not to mention all six at the same time – to help describe a current player, you should probably take notice.
