5 Ways to Celebrate Pride Month

In pre-pandemic times, 45,000 people attended PrideFest each June, making it Wisconsin’s largest LGBTQ+ event. The festival isn’t taking place this year, so here are five ways to support and celebrate pride on your own.

1. Revisit “RuPaul’s Drag Race.”

Some of our favorite local queens like Trixie Mattel, Jaida Essence Hall and Jaymes Mansfield have all appeared in the campy reality competition.

2. Donate to LGBTQ+ organizations.

Instead of going out, give back to local nonprofits like Diverse & Resilient, whose mission centers on LGBTQ+ health equity and safety, or Courage MKE, which supports and houses displaced LGBTQ+ youth in Milwaukee.

3. Prepare pride-themed food and desserts.

Just because Henry Maier Festival Park is empty doesn’t mean your stomach has to be too! Instead of donning rainbow-splashed PrideFest gear, decorate cookies with rainbow sprinkles, or create a multicolored charcuterie board or layer cake.

4. Support LGBTQ+ businesses.

Pick up a custom blend from Swaye Tea (swaye tea.com). Or, if you’d rather drink something a little stronger, venture over to the Cathedral Square watering hole This Is It! (thisisitbar.com), which is now co-owned by the inimitable Trixie Mattel.

5. Create your own PrideFest.

Curate and cue up a playlist of LGBTQ+ artists and deck the halls of your house with rainbow décor!
