4 New Things Coming to Milwaukee This December

A new film festival, a reissue of an acclaimed local album and more this month

1. Violent Femmes

OUT DEC. 1

For its 40th anniversary, Milwaukee’s punky sons Violent Femmes are re-releasing their 1983 self-titled debut album. Along with alternate versions of favorites like “Blister in the Sun” and “Add it Up,” fans will find newly remastered audio, demos, B-sides and live cuts. The two-CD set is available Dec. 1; a 4-disc vinyl set drops in February.

2. Fern & Nettle Peppermint Bark Soap

OUT DEC. 3

This local handcrafted skincare shop is selling a limited-edition holiday soap this season. It’s made with natural ingredients and smells like the chocolatey treat it’s named after. It’s available online now or at the Pritzlaff Building’s Hover Craft market on Dec. 3.

3. “Beyond Heights: Skyscrapers and the Human Experience”

OPENING DEC. 8

The Milwaukee Art Museum’s exhibition looks at the way skyscrapers transformed not only our landscapes but also our thinking. It features prints, photographs, furniture and more. The exhibit opens Dec. 8.

4. Milwaukee Illuminate Film Festival

STARTS DEC. 18

Highlighting the work of trans, queer, BIPOC, Jewish, femme, fat, neurodivergent and disabled filmmakers, this underground film festival debuts on Dec. 18 with screenings and a live Q&A.
