The remodeled, refreshed former Stonefly is back to doing what the space was known for – brewing beer (try the Pomp & Pamplemousse Imperial IPA) and serving food (best bet: fried chicken).

Vertical is the direction in which a burger moves. This Fifth Ward force takes the notion of layers well beyond the prosaic. It’s a little like Joan Rivers’ face. More, apparently, is better. But a few qualities stand out here – the ability to build your own burger from oodles of ingredients, and the Stack’d options for gluten-avoiders and vegetarians.

One late spring weekend, as the days were getting longer, the Gonzalez family debuted their delicacies made inside a shiny 1950s trailer, calling their business Mazorca Tacos. Their tasty bistec has three tasty going for it – the Wisconsin beer marinade, tender bean topping and delicious corn tortilla right there. Served with a zesty tomatillo salsa? Natch.
You can see a lot from a second-story roof in the Third Ward, it turns out. Café Benelux’s rooftop space is open for lunch and dinner—as well as weekend brunch—on warm-weather days. Umbrellas over each table shield you from the sun. With a menu modeled after Belgium’s cafes, signature dishes include cheese-stuffed bitterballen, mussels with frites or gulden draak pecan pie, plus a hearty roster of sandwiches, salads and burgers.

The setting for this counter-service joint (an old 1971 VW bus) draws extra attention to the plant-based activity going on here. Besides making their own seitan for sandwiches, they craft vegan ice creams. Sandwiches range from Jamaican jerk seitan on ciabatta to grilled sun-dried tomato pesto.
