The aroma emitted by Edna cannot be denied. “She” perfumes Iron Grate BBQ Co., overriding the smell of roasted coffee beans. Edna’s 10-foot-long, 500-gallon, mostly recycled self is the force behind half of this unusual business model. Iron Grate shares 8,000 square feet of real estate with roaster-café Hawthorne Coffee.

While the decor conjures up a pseudo-bordello (red paint, crystal-like chandeliers), the cuisine takes off in various directions: BBQ (really fine beef brisket), raw oysters from the coasts, Louisiana jambalaya, and ??low country?? South Carolina specialties like?frogmore stew. A mint julep will get you in the mood.

Thirty-foot ceilings and rustic red, blue and beige walls create a pretty amazing feel inside the bar, and the airy pub has room for plenty of beer drinkers. The beer list is solid. Pabst is on tap, of course, and is joined by 12 Wisconsin beers (New Glarus, Lakefront, etc.). The bottle list includes roughly 40 options, and if you feel like slumming it, you can order a can of Old Milwaukee.
