I came of age when Farwell and North was a nightlife bellwether and “classy” meant going to Von Trier, the dark Germanic bar that was our refuge on finger-numbing winter nights. If you’ve never been to Balistreri’s before, the thin crust pizza (literally any kind) is a must. Some other delectable Italian dishes include veal scallopini, Bistecca alla Siciliano – Steak Sicilian Style, and of course the delicious Friday Fish Fry.

“Family, superb food and quality ingredients” has been the motto for Barbiere’s since 1963. Before getting into it, the homemade garlic bread is an absolute must, which then can be followed by one of their scrumptious pizza pies, lasagna or sandwiches.
The craft brewery is as conscious of the food it serves as of the beer it makes. The chef’s mantra that drinkers want to eat well is in full force here. Vegan options available too.

Vientiane holds up to its Southeast Asian name, showing skill with noodle soups and Thai specialties like pad see ew. And the sauce served with its spring rolls – light, piquant and speckled with crushed peanuts – is the best in town.
