The remodeled, refreshed former Stonefly is back to doing what the space was known for – brewing beer (try the Pomp & Pamplemousse Imperial IPA) and serving food (best bet: fried chicken).

This far-more-fashionable sister of Kopp??s Custard also makes a darn good burger ?? the more dolled up, the better. In these crisp, coolly modern surroundings (the artwork changes often), a diverse audience attacks orders of wings, nachos, bacon grilled cheese sandwiches and (if feeling semi-healthy) the pork teriyaki salad. Elsa??s also has accomplished the rare feat of making broccoli taste good.
The fire station theme is carried throughout the brick/hardwood two-floor venue (replete with engine-house memorabilia). Breakfast can be straightforward (eggs and bacon) or not (patacon con huevo). Scrambled eggs, potatoes and salami; the “super” HP adds vegetables and cheese. Corned beef hash rarely disappoints. Nor does my Jewish deli fallback – a bagel topped with lox, cream cheese and red onion.

If you’re looking for something that’s a little bit higher up on the epicurean scale, this one’s for you. Maple-glazed, seared and thick-sliced duck breast is the bomb on its own. Layer it inside a warm, sturdy flour tortilla with queso, lettuce and the delicious chipotle salsa and the stars really align. One pro tip: Order the pureed black beans and scoop them into your taco! Head to Poco Loco Cantina in Brown Deer for this masterpiece.
