The modern space with chocolate-brown walls on the corner of Mason and Milwaukee is devoted to classic, regional cuisine. Housemade four-cheese ravioli, ossobuco and rack of lamb with mint pesto are all specialties worth considering. Tiny and intimate.

Red walls and lots of colorful canvases populate the dining room of this casual Italian a block from UW-Milwaukee. Pastas are the better choices (from a menu that includes pizzas, shrimp scampi and chicken saltimbocca). Start with an app like breaded eggplant or baked goat cheese in tomato-basil sauce.
Visually, this place is relatively unchanged since opening in 1993. The old family photos and unpretentious, tight-fitting dining room make diners feel at home. It’s also helped that head chef Juan Urbieta has helmed this ship for so long. He keeps folks coming back for the fried calamari, brick-style chicken and hand-cut pappardelle with duck ragu.

I came of age when Farwell and North was a nightlife bellwether and “classy” meant going to Von Trier, the dark Germanic bar that was our refuge on finger-numbing winter nights. My UW-Milwaukee friends liked to sit at a certain table near the bar.
