This little bake shop has earned a diverse, devoted following for its cookies (triple-chocolate ginger), pastries (croissant) and rustic whole grain breads. Lunchtime options ā a savory tart with potatoes and onions was a recent standout ā are complemented, sweetly, by flaky creations, and thereās nary a wrong choice. But the kouign-amann (say āqueen ah-mahnā) takes the (butter) cake.

The storefront offers a great 3-5 p.m. happy hour menu and “Upper Midwest”-inspired evening meals like crispy cast-iron chicken and “quarry-style” steak.
Competed against AJ Bombers in the Travel Channel’s “Food Wars,” and despite losing, has triumphed with its “Loser Burger” (colby jack, bacon, fried onions). You can’t really lose here. The hangover burger is like the “Loser,” only topped with a fried egg. The Fresco burger (personal fave) has guac, habanero cheese and pico de gallo. Also very serious about bloody marys, topping them with ingredients that will blow your mind (i.e., bacon cheeseburger).

Thirty-foot ceilings and rustic red, blue and beige walls create a pretty amazing feel inside the bar, and the airy pub has room for plenty of beer drinkers. The beer list is solid. Pabst is on tap, of course, and is joined by 12 Wisconsin beers (New Glarus, Lakefront, etc.). The bottle list includes roughly 40 options, and if you feel like slumming it, you can order a can of Old Milwaukee.
