Eric & Magill

This isn’t the first time Eric & Magill was mentioned here at Music Notes. The Milwaukee-based duo’s 2010 online-only release All Those I Know was listed among our favorite local albums of last year. Now, Eric & Magill is seeking your help in giving that tremendous album a physical release.   All Those I Know album cover. If the band can reach $1,750 in pledges by March 17, it will release All Those I Know in form of a vinyl pressing. They’ve established a Kickstarter page to obtain funds for the pressing. For a minimum donation of $1, backers will…

Selling Out the Riverside

Tuesday, Feb. 1: Aunt Martha at Up & Under Pub, 7 p.m. (FREE) The pride of the tiny New Hampshire town of Wilmont, Aunt Martha has embarked on a multi-state tour. The stripped-down folk band grants Milwaukee a night of enjoyable-yet-sullen musical renderings just days before they’re to record a Daytrotter Session (a telling sign of promise in the realm of indie rock). If you’re bored and in need of live music, not only is this pretty much your only option, but attendees can also pat themselves on the back for supporting an unestablished touring act. (1216 E. Brady St.,…

Preparing for Pablove

Sometimes, the worst and most tragic parts of life have the ability to bring out the best in people. On Jan. 23 of last year, nine bands and a crowd of almost 900 kindhearted music fans converged in Milwaukee’s historic Turner Hall Ballroom for the inaugural Pablove Benefit Concert, “a special evening to improve the lives of children with cancer.” Music Notes was fortunate enough to be given a DVD of that performance in accordance with Saturday’s second-annual Pablove Benefit Concert in Milwaukee. In the movie’s first moments, we are introduced to Jeff Castelaz, a former Milwaukee resident and owner…

Cheap Tricks and Disappearing Acts

Photo courtesy Chris Rosenau. Tuesday, Jan. 25: All Tiny Creatures with Adopt A Highway, Pressboard, The Demix and Stagediver at Mad Planet, 9 p.m. The latest installment of the MELT: Electronic Music Moving Forward series features All Tiny Creatures, an ambient instrumental group led by ex-Collections of Colonies of Bees member Thomas Wincek. Much like CCB, this group excels at patiently building airy dreamscapes through impeccable musicianship. But All Tiny Creatures’ delivery is ultimately edgier and darker than its predecessor. (533 E. If I Were A Member of the Academy Part 1

Attention boys and girls, one of the holiest of all holy days is mere hours away…Oscar Nomination Day! Every year for the past 20 years, I have set my alarm clock to catch the announcement of the nominations on E!, the only channel that carries the live announcement here in the Central Time Zone. For several of the past 20 years, E! made a big to-do about covering the early-morning announcement (around 5:30 a.m. PST) with a live special that in early years ran for a full hour, and in later years was reduced to 30 minutes. For the past…

Made in Milwaukee Records

It all started, as most great ideas do, in a bar. Josh Adams, owner of Mindpool Productions and longtime local music fan, approached Phantom Channel of the Rusty Ps with an idea: Combine the throwback party hip-hop of the Rusty Ps with the smooth flamenco guitar artistry of Evan Christian, mashing up two of Milwaukee’s most unique, dynamic artists. Phantom Channel responded simply, “Chuck’s already all over this.” This unique musical brainchild of Adams and Chuck Watson, also known as Rusty Ps producer extraordinaire S Watson, is currently laying down tracks at National Recording in Milwaukee. When completed, the album…
