The Milwaukee Public Market’s new display looks good enough
to eat. And if it wasn’t going to be sitting on a table for a week, you probably
could. Milwaukee Area Technical College’s baking and pastry arts students have
created nearly 50 elaborate gingerbread houses that are now on display in the upper level of the market.
The Parade of Houses runs until December 11, and the public
is encouraged to come and participate in the silent auction, which will benefit
MATC’s scholarship foundation. You also have the chance to vote for your
favorite house to win the People’s Choice Award, which will also award scholarship money to some of the bakers.
Sponsored by Wisconsin Bakers Association, the Milwaukee
Public Market, and the American Institute of Wine and Food, MATC’s students have
taken this holiday tradition to another level. While some chose to keep their displays small but extravagant with the usual house, others took a much more complex
route, creating a castle, a boat, the Eiffel Tower, and something that looks like a scene from “The Hobbit.”
Winners of the competition and auction will be announced
at a reception when the parade is over on Tuesday Dec. 11, at 6:30 p.m. Auction
winners will be able to bring their prizes home to display just in time for the
holidays.
