About Event
Using dynamic brushwork, Eric Aho’s beautifully painted surfaces capture the essence of light, air, fire, and land. In his fifth exhibition at Tory Folliard Gallery, Aho's new work shifts to abstraction: away from focused observation and toward remembered experience. Some of the paintings are inspired by his recent workshop "Direct Response:  Outdoor Painting" held on the beautiful grounds of the Lynden Sculpture Garden. One of his goals is to make the viewer of the painting encounter the essential equivalent of his natural experience. Using a memory based approach, Aho takes the recognizable details of the landscape such as trees, hills and ridges, and focuses on immediate constructions of chaos and order of the shapes.   Aho says, "The more I attempt to make something real, the more abstract it becomes. I love this paradox. As the years go by, I am increasingly engaged with the way abstraction and depiction, or realism are actually joined and in constant struggle with each other.  It comes down to how the world is perceived. Can I paint a forest without rendering a single tree? Or show the entirety of forest with just one tree?"
