Dramatis Personae
Ryan Braun's acting chops.

If star athletes are akin to star entertainers, then Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun has dramatic skills rivaling those of Daniel Day-Lewis. Once allegations of Braun’s doping surfaced in late 2011, he adopted many personas, each designed to insulate his public image – which is worth millions to his bank account and, by extension, to the franchise. His July suspension for the remainder of the 2013 baseball season, and his accompanying vague confession, set the stage for Braun to audition for his most challenging role yet: the comeback kid.

THE INNOCENT MAN

“THIS IS ALL B.S. I AM COMPLETELY INNOCENT.” (DECEMBER 2011)

THE SAINT

“I WOULD BET MY LIFE THAT THIS SUBSTANCE NEVER ENTERED MY BODY AT ANY POINT.” (FEBRUARY 2012)

THE CRUSADER

“TODAY IS ABOUT EVERYBODY WHO’S EVER BEEN WRONGLY ACCUSED AND EVERYBODY WHO HAS EVER HAD TO STAND UP FOR WHAT IS ACTUALLY RIGHT.” (FEBRUARY 2012)

THE TEMPORARILY EXONERATED

“WE WON BECAUSE THE TRUTH IS ON MY SIDE. THE TRUTH IS ALWAYS RELEVANT, AND AT THE END OF THE DAY, THE TRUTH PREVAILED.” (FEBRUARY 2012)

THE VICTIM

“IT’S BEEN A LOT – EMOTIONALLY, MENTALLY – IT’S A LOT TO DEAL WITH.” (MARCH 2012)

THE STALWART

“IN REGARDS TO THAT WHOLE CRAZY SITUATION, THE TRUTH STILL HASN’T CHANGED.”
(JULY 2013)

THE AMBIGUOUS APOLOGIST

“I AM NOT PERFECT. I REALIZE NOW THAT I HAVE MADE SOME MISTAKES. I AM WILLING TO ACCEPT THE CONSEQUENCES OF THOSE ACTIONS.” (JULY 2013)
