Serious Concerns for West Coast Brewers
The most important ingredient in beer isn’t hops or grains. It’s water. A serious drought in Southern California may have a serious effect on California breweries. An article in Brewer Magazine examines the issue and how it relates to breweries like Stone and Sierra Nevada.

The topic of water usage and conservation was a big one at the Beer Summit hosted by Beer Capitol Distributing at Lakefront Brewery in the spring and was on the minds of the brewers who attended. Water conservation is certainly something that isn’t going away anytime soon.

A Tasting Word Attending
The latest update on the amazing tasting at Sugar Maple (441 E. Lincoln Ave.) on Thursday (August 7) ensures that it’s an event that can’t be missed. Perennial is bringing three beers, including the rare Abraxas Imperial Stout. Indeed has committed four brews, one of which is the intriguing Mexican Honey Imperial Lager. Surly is offering four beers including Furious IPA and Cacao Bender Brown Ale. And Toppling Goliath and Central Waters are still deciding what deliciousness to bring. New Holland may bring a Coffee Dragon’s Milk and some other good stuff. The taps start pouring at 6 p.m. I recommend being there early.

Barley Pop of the Week

There’s just something about Ale Asylum Bedlam! Belgian IPA that I love. Maybe it’s the fruity Citra hops, or maybe it’s how the hops work with the Belgian yeast. Whatever, it’s delicious. The folks at Ale Asylum know what they’re doing.

Quick Taps

This week’s specialty beer served during the Lakefront Brewery fish fry (Friday from 4 to 9:30 p.m.) is Bridge Burner with bacon whiskey. Wow.

Goose Island announced its Bourbon County lineup for this year. A Chicago Tribune article mentions Vanilla Rye and a revamped Proprietors as highlights to look for on Black Friday.
