A prelude to a dining and also a wining event. And a chef's departure for artier paths.





Days of Hunger

Tosa is a busy place in September. First, there’s TosaFest (Sept. 7-8), which uses the conceivably unstoppable combo of live music (Paul Cebar to Buckwheat Zydeco) and street/fair foods to lure in the masses. Just a few days later comes 10 Days in Tosa (Sept. 10-19). Similar to Downtown Dining Week, this event offers various deals restaurants located in Wauwatosa. Twenty, at last count. They include: Café Perrin, Cafe Hollander, Juniper 61, Ristorante Bartolotta, Maxie’s Southern Comfort, Firefly Urban Bar & Grill and Rocket Baby Bakery. The deals are for breakfast ($5 and $10 menus), lunch ($5 and $10 menus) and dinner ($5, $10 and $20 menus). For instance, at Le Reve Patisserie & Cafe, the $20 dinner menu features a mixed greens salad, steak au poivre, haricots verts and pommes frites. To see more 10 Days menu info, click here.

Stormin’ Gorman
This weekend is Jason Gorman’s last working in the kitchen of La Merenda (125 E. National Ave.). Gorman, who put in seven years as Dream Dance Steak’s executive chef, had been having a blast, cooking and collaborating with La Merenda co-owner Peter Sandroni and his staff. But the Chicago native is heading back to the Windy City for a culinary gig at the Art Institute of Chicago, where he’ll work with Tony Mantuano, the James Beard Award-winning owner of Chicago’s Spiaggia and Kenosha’s Mangia. Gorman says he expects his new job to offer constant variety and allow him to work closely with Mantuano on big-ticket events. But Gorman loves Milwaukee (how could he not?) and has no plans to sever his local ties. Incidentally, if you're heading to La Merenda this week, Gorman suggests you try the mushroom-huitlacoche soft tacos.

Oeno Event
What is a “grand” wine tasting? The chance to sample some 145 wines is as good a definition as any. Thief Wine Shop & Bar, which has locations in Shorewood and at Milwaukee Public Market, is holding its Fall Grand Tasting in a few weeks. The wines are said to be in the $15-$50 per bottle price range and reflect the shop's "high-value, terroir-driven" focus. Event location: Milwaukee Public Market’s upper level, 400 N. Water St. Saturday Sept. 15, 5:45-8 p.m. For tickets ($60, or $95 for “Reserve Level," which has an earlier time: 3:30-5:30 p.m.), call 414-277-7707.
