Milwaukee’s most famous pizzeria – which perished in a five-alarm fire in 2010– reopened in a new location along Downer Avenue this week. Like the previous location, Pizza Man’s wine list is top-notch. From light and refreshing Viognier to sultry Ports, there’s something to pair with every topping. Six sparkling-wine choices are also on the menu and a perennial pizza-friendly wine – Zinfandel – offers 19 selections, including ones from Turley Wine Cellars, Seghesio Family Vineyards and Ridge Vineyards.

Wine’s best pairing – cheese – is the focus of a Groppi’s Italian Market event this Sunday. Celebrity cheesemonger Gordon Edgar – cheese buyer for Rainbow Grocery Cooperative in San Francisco and author of the memoir Cheesemonger: A Life on the Wedge – starts slicing and serving cheese at noon. Six fromages will be on deck, all Edgar’s personal favorites and with witty stories attached to each. Cost for the tasting is $35 and includes a copy of his memoir. Sauvignon Blancs from New Zealand are the perfect summer wine as they pair well with food-friendly gatherings and their zesty, zippy nature fulfills a quest for a refreshing wine. I recently tried 2011 Massimo Prestige Vineyards (Marlborough, New Zealand, $13) and enjoyed its grassiness, crisp grapefruit and guava notes, and honeyed finish that lingers on the palate.
